Access Issue: Access issue - Monastery, Cedar Park, Combat Rock, etc. - open since 2023 Details

Update: per Bruce Hildenbrand: the area has been open since 2023.

Per JF M: as of May 2022, there is no signage on-site, nor information on the USFS webpage for the Cameron Peak Fire (nor on their published map of closures) that indicates the area is closed.

Per Bruce Hildenbrand: it appears that the Forest Service has closed access to all the climbing areas accessed via Storm Mountain Road (Monastery, Cedar Park, Combat Rock, etc.) until they can clear all the dangerous dead trees from the Cameron Peak fire.

I worked this issue with Eric Murdock at the AF, and it looks like the Forest Service picked Devil's Gulch Road as the southern boundary even though all the climbing areas on MP.com were not burned.

Description

Elmer Fudd's Wok is a nice toprope wall located in the gully between Combat Rock and the parking area. It has a 2-3 minute approach. The route grades vary from 5.5 to 5.11. EFW is often a nice place on a warm day as it is not as exposed to the full sun all day long. The rock is granite and gneiss, and there are two sets of chains at the top. One set is directly above the main wall, and the other is down and to the left, perhaps 25 feet down from the pine tree at top left. You can also sling the tree for a good TR.

Getting There

From Loveland, take US Highway 34 west towards Estes Park. When you get to the fork in the road at Drake, go right on County Road 43. Turn right on the forest service road just a couple of hundred yards after the fork. Go up the road, and continue through the switchbacks, perhaps 1 mile up the road. Park as for Combat Rock, just past the last switchback. Walk down the trail to the bottom of the gully. EFW is the 70 foot slab just before you head uphill to Combat Rock.
