Gate View Canyon

Colorado > Gunnison

Description

This canyon is full of rock, some good, some bad, some great. There are many established routes, but there is very little information on FAs, names, and grades. Kent Whozi?, Chris Begue, and possibly Chuck Grossman did some FAs in the 1980s here. The rock is similar to Taylor Canyon in places and similar to The Black in others. It seems that most of the development so far has been on the road side, though there is high quality rock on the other side of the river as well, it is just harder to get to. If anyone has information to share, let's hear it.

Getting There

From Gunnison, head west on US 50 and then take the left turn towards Lake City. On the way to Lake City, turn right onto the Blue Mesa Cut-off (dirt road from here on). Head straight, and there will be a sign for Gate View.

[Hide Comment] What is the route info in this area? Are there more established routes than posted on MP? If so, who should I speak with? Sep 2, 2014

[Hide Comment] Chris Begue (and possibly Chuck Grossman) and I spent some time here in the early '80s and did a half dozen routes or so. I don't have much recollection other than I remember Taylor-like granite and some loose approaches. If Chris is still on the site, he will probably remember better than I do. I think there were a couple of established routes at that time. Looks like it's finally getting some well deserved attention. Apr 6, 2022
