Description
Warning! - Garth Rocks has ran into access issues as of recent years. Not only trashed and covered in graffiti, Garth has also seen lots of housing developments change land access. The area has become questionable to use at best.
Garth Rocks is, or at least was once the site of a beginner/intermediate bouldering mecca, seemingly too far away from the impending growth of the city to be an issue. Scattered problems up to around V7 with great landings and great sandstone. Fields of boulders begging to have FAs set have beckoned to climbers.
Unfortunately, this land (the boulders in specific) has had housing developments push right up against the boulder fields. Some boulders have been destroyed to make room for the mansions. Climbing here is no longer what it once was, and continuing to do so could be an issue. The area has also sadly become a dumping ground for a dense amount of trash, as well as the subject of defacement due to graffiti. This page will be left here for the historical purpose of what was climbed here, by who, when, and how. As of 2024, boulders are still usable, but given the state of the area, it is a fringe area that almost no climber would want to bother with anyway. The community as a whole could use to discuss the area and what should be done with it.
The Aerial Wall above the boulder fields has some distance from the developments, but has been subject to arguably worse amount of trashing and vandalism than the boulders. Regardless of the legal/social acceptability of climbing here, note that trash and graffiti are prevalent.
The sandstone here is easily damaged when wet. Please allow at least 24-48 hours before climbing after any precipitation. If the ground is at all damp, please do not climb on any local sandstone. Consider nearby options on basalt, limestone, granite, or plastic instead.
Getting There
From The Desert Rat (468 W St George Blvd) drive south on Bluff Street (UT 18). Bluff Street will become Riverside Drive. Continue on Riverside Drive until you come to River Road. Turn right (south) on River Road, then turn left (east) onto 2450 South. At the end of 2450 South turn right (south) onto 3000 East. Take this road until Maple Mountain Drive. Turn left (east) onto Maple Mountain Drive. Maple Mountain Drive will dead end and the Scattered boulders of Garth Rocks will be in front of you with the Central Park boulders being just to your right (south).
