Description

Beautiful collection of glacial erratics on a ridge in Killington vt. Access area from the Appalachian Trail. This is primarily a bouldering area with great rock, easy access and a beautiful setting. Currently about 80 developed problems with the potential for 100 plus. Some of these problems may have been climbed 10-12 years ago by Nate Whitehorne and crew.

Getting There

Take Thundering Brook Rd from route 4 in Killington Vt. Follow the road past mountain meadows lodge and park on the left just before the dam. Follow the road back towards route 4 and look for the white blazed trail on the left. Follow the AT north for 2-3 minutes and you will cross a small stream. You will see the first boulder on the right just after the stream. Continue 200 yards past to the red eft boulder on the right and 50 more yards up the trail to the dirty crack boulder. Most of the boulders are behind these two scattered in the woods on or just below the ridge. There are two more clusters about 50-100 yards down the trail past the dirty crack boulder.

Recently stopped by DEKD on my way to my family's place. Conditions were awful, the rock was wet, but I was impressed by the rock quality. Hoping to get back out there soon and send Dirty Crack, among others. Jul 8, 2017

Thinking of checking out this area soon, what conditions should we expect to find the boulders in? Do people still climb here? Jul 19, 2015
JohnF--
Thanks again for your help guys. The trip was a great success! I was really impressed with how much these boulders had to offer. The spring sliding boulder and the dirty crack boulder were our favorites. We managed to hit pretty much everything in the two days except for the Western Frontier, unfortunately. Definitely will make sure we go there if we're ever back in the neighborhood. I'll upload some of our pictures at some point! Oct 23, 2013

Thanks for the notes. Maybe I'll touch it up after our trip and submit a more correct, polished copy for people to use. Oct 6, 2013
Not a bad job with the map. A couple of notes:
Red Eft sits just off the trail.
Blue Hole is downhill and right of Maritime.
Triple B is left of Maritime, closer to the AT than Maritime, off in a valley of its own.
Mini me, Birds Nest, and Pig are all left of Fat Bastard, while swamp is down and a touch right. Oct 5, 2013

Hey freezeus and rogerk: many thanks to both of you for your advice! You both suggested a lot of the same problems and boulders(Spring Sliding, Maritime, Invisible, Dirty Crack), so it looks like we've got the weekend pretty much planned out for us!

By the way, I sketched a couple of rough maps of the area just based off of the descriptions of the boulders on this site. I doubt they're particularly accurate, but hopefully they'll help us orient ourselves a little. Figure I'd post them here in case anyone else wants to use them with whatever comments on them you might have.

We're both really excited to get up there in what will hopefully be beautiful mid-October conditions and climb. Thanks again. Oct 5, 2013

Sorry - the delay...John I sent you a detailed email yesterday. Your initial email wen to my junk folder. Oct 2, 2013

Haven't seen freezeus respond to a post I made either, so I'll give you some beta:

Start at the Spring Sliding Boulder, plenty there for your girl and Leaf Peepers Hate Spring for you.

Then Red Eft Boulder-Red Eft for her, Jamaican Lager for you.

Then head to right ridge area, plenty for her, Sloper Slapper and Heel Hooker for you. Return to Invisible Boulder and do Peg Board. Then back to LT and Dirty Crack Boulder. You do Dirty Crack, and she does Stinger Mantis.

At the Western Frontier, you do Maritimer and Man Overboard(coolest V4 in VT). She can do Mastitis and Jibs. The Blue Hole is right there and is worth a quick stop for both of you.

At Dr. Evil's Lair, check out the Pig Boulder for a bunch of problems for the two of you.

Have fun! Sep 30, 2013

Hey freezeus: I'm planning on taking a trip up to Killington in mid-October with my girlfriend, and I was hoping I could get some advice from you as to how to get the most enjoyment out of the two days of climbing we'll be able to do at the DEKD boulders. I sent you a message directly the other day but I don't know if it reached you or not, so I figured I'd try posting here.

I'm mostly hoping you can just let me know which boulders/problems you think are the best in the area, the ones we shouldn't miss. Some background on us: I'm a little more experienced, very tall, love slopers and dynos, and climb v3-v5 comfortably outside. She is on the shorter side, likes traverses and low problems, and this will be one of her first times climbing outside (so v0-v2 range). Any areas or problems come to mind?

Thanks a lot for any help you can give us! Sep 29, 2013

Thanks for putting this info up. I visited for a couple hours today. Loved the Spring Boulder(mostly because I'm weak). Looking forward to seeing what else you put up. Jul 15, 2011
