Description Suggest change

A river in a steep valley, contains world class whitewater rafting and kayaking. A dirt road runs from the Saopin Bridge heading south into the mountains. Approximately 5 miles from La Ceiba, there begins to be river lodges to stay and pay for rafting trips and hiking trips. Omega Tours, Jungle River and La Moskita Ecotours are the three big ecotourism companies in La Ceiba. Omega is run by a german and has great german food and fun bar in the jungle, La moskita is run by a honduran with typical food and Jungle River is also run by a honduran not a lot of food but has beer, and the perfect base for river rock jumping. At the Jungle River site there is lots of fun water bouldering where the starts begin in the water and you must climb on smooth river rock. A beautiful place with Pico Bonito National Park on the other side of the river with it's high elevated peaks with dense jungle to add to the beauty. Further small villages can be found upriver, and again due to the force of the river there are boulders larger than houses and are smoother than silk scattered along the river. Favorite place in the world.

Getting There Suggest change

La Ceiba, Honduras is a 3-hour bus from San Pedro Sula or 8-hour bus from the capital Tegucigalpa. You can take a taxi from the La Ceiba bus station to Banana Republic Guest House and arrange transportation to the Jungle River Lodge. You can contact Omega Tours and they can provide a paid shuttle (www.omegatours.info). Or you can try out your Spanish skills and take a taxi to the Rio Cangrejal park entrance (La entrada de Rio Cangrejal) and stick out your thumb to go further upriver (taxi fare will be about 1-3 US dollars) or take a taxi all the way up to the river lodges (taxi fare about 10 - 20 US dollars) Hitchhiking is well practiced there, only back of pickups will pick you up.
Get to the Jungle River lodge, and walk down the stairs and you will be able to figure out the rest.
