Description

Off the AT about a mile past the more popular and more crowded Annapolis Rocks is Black Rocks. Shorter than the Annapolis Rocks climbs, but still some good toproping routes. There is seldom any climbers up this way. Be careful moving about as there is a lot of lichen, moss, dust and small unstable rocks.

Getting There

You have a couple options for getting to Black Rocks. One is to park off of Rt 40 (big parking area) and hike north on the AT towards Annapolis Rocks for about 2.25 miles. Another mile past Annapolis are the Black Rock outcroppings. The second option (and the one I prefer) is to go to the end of White Oak Rd on the west side of the ridge and park in the parking area at the end of the road (room for ~8 vehicles.) Take the Thurston Griggs Trail around and up to the Appalachian Trail. Once there, turn right and head for approximately a third of a mile when you come to Black Rocks off in the woods to the right. The TG trail is shorter, but is a sustained climb for about a mile before leveling off somewhat. Plus there is a great spring halfway up for refilling your water bottles.
