Pasang Lhamu Climbing Wall

International > Asia > Nepal > Indoor Climbing Walls

Description

Another option for gym climbing in Kathmandu. The wall is named for Pasang Lhamu, the first Nepalese woman to climb Mount Everest. She perished on the mountain in 1993 while trying to help a fellow Nepalese climber. The Pasang Lhamu Mountaineering Foundation was started in her honor. You can find out more about her and the foundation here: pasanglhamu.org/

The gym is the typical indoor/outdoor wall here. It is an artificial wall so in the US we would call it an "indoor wall". However here in Nepal the walls are covered overhead so but open all around. So technically you are also climbing outdoors. The wall is 10 m height by 10 m wide with grades from 5.9(6a) to 5.11(7a+). There was also a few climbing routes on the left hand side of the overhanging wall. This was the only flat section. Be warned that all of the other the climbing is all overhanging and strenuous. There was only one rope rope up when we were there. They had extra ropes available but you probably need to be prepared to do some lead climbing.

This gym is in the north part of Kathmandu. It is accessed from the ring road. Since there is a wall around the building, it can be hard to spot. The climbing wall is on the back side of the building so you cannot see the wall itself until you have traveled too far east of it. There are not many distinct land marks, but if traveling east on the ring road, go past Narayan Gopal chowk, then the new Bhatbhateni department store. If you pass a big lot of construction equipment, then you have gone to far. I posted a picture of the building but it can still be hard to see from the road. They have a pullout right in front of the building.

All needed sport climbing equipment including climbing shoes, ropes harnesses, belay devices, and chalk bags, can be purchased or rented from the Sports Climbing Center. The charge to climb is Rs 350 for the day and equipment rentals are Rs 100.

Parking, changing rooms and showers are available. They also have an indoor reception and an outdoor viewing area for friends and family members to wait or watch while you climb.
