Description Suggest change

Valcorchero is a boulder littered area in the hills just north of Plasencia. The rock is abrasive granite and provides good friction and the grades run from IV to 8a+. There are around 100 bolted or TR routes anywhere from 4.5m to 25m long and about 150 cleaned and marked boulder problems. Bolts and anchors are usually reliable as a retrofitting program has been underway for sometime now but you will occasionally find older generation protection still in place.

Climbing is possible year round, though spring and fall are the ideal times. Camping is prohibited, however it is possible to bivouac in the area of Roca Gorda. Be as discreet as possible and leave the area clean. There is also a campsite in plasencia called "La Chopera" 2 km away and another in Malpartida de Plasencia, "Camping Monfragüe" 12 km away.

Every year since 1985, the Grupo Placentino de Montaña has a bouldering competition (Competición Boulder de Valcorchero) here during the second half of September. Also, spread throughout the area are sculptures by Miguel Martinez (an occasional sculpture will also double as a bouldering problem).

Getting There Suggest change

Once in Plasencia, head to the hospital Virgen del Puerto conspicuously on Av. de la Virgen del Puerto. Drive past the hospital towards La Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Puerto for a little under a kilometer. Turn left up the hill when you see the cattle gaurd and gate (cows are loose, so make sure to close the fence behind you). Take a right at both forks in the dirt road to arrive at Roca Gorda, the center of the area.
