Squished between the Okangan Plateau and Selkirks Mountains
A range of mountains more loved by heli-skiers than climbers, at least for now. There are plenty of glaciated peaks, but more often mountaineers get distracted by the Selkirks and Purcells.
LOWLAND ROCK CLIMBING AREAS
There are at least two very well developed sport climbing areas on the sharp quartzite of the Monashee's eastern toes; Begbie Bluffs and Blanket Creek.
Even better is Kinnard Bluffs, along the Columbia River down by Castlegar. I doubt anyone else has called Kinnard part of the Monashees. Along the US border, the southernmost Monashees, Selkirks, and Purcells are all known by the locals as Kootenays. Unlike the Selkirks and Purcells, the name Monashee stops at the border, even though the mountains do not.
DETAILED MAPS FOR ALPINE PEAKS OF THE MONASHEES
The Monashees are famous for being hard to access. On the other hand, helicopters can be used too.
NORTHERN MONASHEE MOUNTAINS
The biggest glaciers, highest peaks, and deepest wilderness are found north of Highway One.
A trail to alpine peaks is a rare find in the northern Monahsees. The view from Canoe Mountain includes Mount Sir Wilfred Laurier and Mount Robson.
The walls of Dominion Creek are not likely to be good rock. Could a helicopter even land in the valley below the big walls? On the other hand, if one feels that there is no future in climbing other people's routes, then maybe this is a perfect setting for high adventure.
Mount Monashee is the highest peak of the Monashees.
Hallam Peak is on most maps but Milton is the real climber news - steep and not well known. William Putnam described the south face of this group as "severe" and the local rock as "rotten schist".
South of the Hallam Peak area, the geology changes to harder rocks. That is why the aretes seemed better sculpted in the Schrund Peak area.
GOLD RANGE (southern Monashees)
This was the original name for the entire range. Now the Gold Range is the sector between Highway One and Highway Six. Mt Begbie is not included below because it is already listed in the area menu for the Monashees with it's own map.
For rock climbers, the best peaks of the Gold Range of the Monashee Mountains are a bit further south. Climbers have been busy on the technical summits of Mount Thor, Mount Odin, Mt Burnham.
