Oak Flat

Arizona > Central Arizona > Queen Creek Canyon
Warning Access Issue: Must Register! Private Property-The Pond, Atlantis and Mine Area DetailsDrop down

Description

There are well over 1,000 problems with a ton of room for development. The rock is volcanic so it can be quite abrasive at times, but yields many different and unique types of holds. The climbs can be anywhere from tic-tacky slabs to steep dynamic highballs and everything in between. Many of the taller problems have bolts for top ropes. Bolts are old so use at your own risk.

Getting There

It's about an hour east of Phoenix on the 60. Drive through Superior, up the canyon and through the tunnel. Once you get to the top of the canyon look for a sign for Oak Flats campground and Magma Mine rd and turn right. Take your first left onto a dirt road. The road isn't to bad but it can get a little rough so be careful. Continue on this road to the top of the hill and take the right fork. Follow the winding road to another road and take a left. Look for a road to the right when you get to a wash with trees (there a hump you drive over). From here the road gets rough. There is parking here (don't block the road) if you don't want to continue or keep going to the main parking and the Warm-up Boulders.

[Hide Comment] Hey guys, I went out today to see if I could find the warm-up boulder atleast..I got a little overwhelmed by the amount of other roads along the way and felt a little lost...I was wondering if anyone had a more detailed description on how to get out to any of these areas? Or if anyone is possibly interested in going out the afternoon of the 26th?

[Hide Comment] I am coming down from October 28th through November 2nd. Is there anyone who can show me around Oak Flats??? Oct 26, 2012
[Hide Comment] I added a pic of the turn off the formally paved road. Low clearance vehicles can get pretty close to the rocks. Davy Jones boulder is only .5mi from Oak Flat camp so you could also just walk directly. Feb 14, 2013
[Hide Comment] SAVE OAK FLATS

From the Access Fund:

"Arizona climbers need your help! There is a vote scheduled for this Thursday, September 19th in the US House of Representatives on legislation that would trade away the popular Oak Flat climbing area in Arizona to Resolution Copper Mining, a foreign owned mining company. All 435 members of the House of Representatives will have the opportunity to cast a vote on this legislation, and we need your help to let him/her know of the many valid reasons to vote “NO” on HR 687."

[Hide Comment] A cool area with a lifetime of cool climbing that is unfortunately marred by a poor MP page and a bizarre number of boulders with bolts on top. I lost count of the number of 12' tall boulders with 'anchors'. Jan 25, 2019
[Hide Comment] "A cool area with a lifetime of cool climbing" about covers it.
History: many TR bolts placed for the comps back in the day, and before stacking 10 pads below a problem was a thing; also, the TR protected problems usually have nasty landings.
I have been updating MP with info as I re-climb many of the areas I climbed back in the day, much more info/photos/access trails available now. I'm only 1 person, may take a hot minute... :) Oct 7, 2021

[Hide Comment] I just want to give props to JoshW for putting in a ton of work into making this area more accessible. With the routes and approaches now up on MP more people can responsibly enjoy this area and see the beauty it holds. Oct 29, 2021

“As my first bill in Congress, the Save Oak Flat From Foreign Mining Act reflects both my values and policy priorities: standing up for communities who have been ignored for too long, promoting responsible stewardship of our natural resources and tribal sovereignty, and ensuring that Arizona’s future isn’t sacrificed for short-term profit. My father, Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva, fought for Oak Flat throughout his career, and I am proud to pick up the mantle in continuing this fight. When President Trump calls Tribal leaders and advocates ‘anti-American,’ it only underscores the urgency of correcting this injustice.”

“Oak Flat is sacred, irreplaceable, and it should never have been traded away to foreign mining giants in a backroom deal that ignored Tribal Nations, silenced the public, and put Arizona’s water and national security at risk. This legislation is about repealing an indefensible land swap, respecting Tribal sovereignty and religious freedom, and protecting Arizona’s precious natural resources for future generations.

“This mine was never designed to benefit the American people; it was designed to benefit multinational corporations and the People’s Republic of China. I am proud to stand with the San Carlos Apache Tribe, Apache Stronghold, and numerous other organizations and communities across Arizona – and the nation – who have fought for decades to protect Chi’chil Biłdagoteel. It’s long past time to make this right.” Dec 11, 2025
