Description

The southwest corner also known as the boulder problem in the sky area in the Shull / Lambert Guide has some excellent well protected short climbs with a short approach.

Getting There

From the parking lot, hike the main hikers trail / old logging road for about 600 feet until the trail splits with steep steps going up to the right. Follow the path with these steps for about 1500 feet for several switchbacks until at the corner of a switchback you are along the ridgeline. This is where the trail to the main southeast face goes down. Continue another 50 feet along the hikers trail and follow a faint climberÂ’s path to the right along the base of a cool boulder and to the wall. Boulder Problem in the sky climbs the obvious corner.

This is a great all year cragging area. In the warmer months it stays shaded until noon or later on the upper pitches and in the winter months it gets direct sun in the afternoon. Many of the routes in the area dry quickly after a rain and most of the Boulder Problem stays protected by a monstrous roof. The newer routes added in the last year may be some of the most classic and exposed climbing at Whiteside and NC. Most of the routes in this area are very well-protected for Whiteside standards. The rock in this area is predominantly feldspar, which is much harder and cleaner than most other areas at Whiteside. This area is not to be missed. Mar 1, 2017
