Description

A small but concentrated area of high-quality boulder problems nestled amongst the Sawtooth Mountains in the Cibola National Forest

Getting There

From Datil, head west on HWY 60 for roughly 12 miles and turn right onto Forest Road 6A. Continue for approximately 5 miles. Turn right on a well-trafficked dirt road. There may or may not be a stone cairn marking this turn. Drive the road for .7 miles until it dead ends. This is the parking. From parking, follow a well-worn trail to boulders. Hike approach time is approximately 10 minutes.

On 2017/09/09 (Pie Fest) road was bumpy and sandy at the wash but many small cars made it up with no issues. Oct 9, 2017

Just a warning. As of 7/30/2017, the road to Monster Island is completely washed out, and it is not possible to drive in. We walked in basically from where the road intersects 6A. It takes ~30 minutes to walk from there. Jul 31, 2017

Yes, good primitive camping spots all along FR6A, FR2, etc. It's forest land and there are no restrictions at the moment so you can camp anywhere, but try to practice "leave no trace". For developed campsites try Datil Well campground.

Please don't camp at the trailhead unless you like a train of climbers/hunters parking and hiking through your camp. There is a very pleasant meadow, prolly full of wildflowers right now, just south of the Monster Island boulders accessed by a spur road east off of FR6A before the trailhead road. Be aware that it can get quite chilly at night, even in the summer, and that it's hunting season so expect many spots to be taken already. Have fun! Sep 6, 2013

Brian,
Yes, however none go straight up from Monster Island due to the bands of choss. There is a existing summit route that goes at 5.8-9. You can find info on the "Sawtooth Crags" topos hidden in a chewed-up medicine bottle in a hueco about 1/2 mile to the South of Monster Island near some sport routes. Some day I will post the pictures I took of them. May 20, 2011
