Description

Cherokee Bluffs is the only sport climbing areas in central Alabama. There has been a lot of progress in making this a better climbing destination for central and lower Alabama in past couple of years. Some of the routes have recently been developed and may need some cleaning.
The land was bought by Forever Wild from Alabama Power and climbing is welcomed.
Access to the climbing routes is a short hike from the parking lot. Hike the John B. Scott trail or the take the road around the yellow gate south for approx. 800 feet until you come to a post with a climbers logo on it next to wooden steps on your right. Follow the steps up and you are now below Roof-a-lufagus (route #7 on the Topo), currently left side of the cliff line. The rest of the cliff line is on the trail to the right. When you leave please double back to the wooden steps/trail.
Please Stay On Trail to Avoid Erosion. Please clean up after yourself. Whatever you take in, be sure to take back out.
Please sign the register at the kiosk and write a large C next to your name if you are a climber. Forever Wild would like to know who is coming to enjoy this awesome spot.

Getting There

FROM AUBURN: Its about a 35 min. drive from Auburn. Drive north on N. College St. (AL-174 N) or N Donahue Dr until it runs into county road 72. Take a left on 72 and follow it until it merges with county road 73, follow it for about a quarter of a mile and take a slight right which puts you back on 72. (The turn is next to two large dumpsters). Follow 72 until it merges into hwy 50. Take a left on 50 and follow it until it comes to a large bridge that goes over the Tallapoosa river, right next to Lake Martin dam. After the bridge head up the hill and take your first left on the Gold Mine Rd. Gold Mine Rd. then winds down the hill to a right hand switch back which turns into a dirt road that runs along the river. From here follow the road until you come to the Parking lot.

FROM MONTGOMERY: Take I 85 to exit 26 to Tallassee, go through Tallassee take a slight right onto 229 (Kent Rd) and follow it until you come to hwy 50 and take right onto 50 and follow it until you are going down a big hill before the bridge and take a right onto gold mine rd. just before you cross over the river. Gold Mine Rd. then winds down the hill to a right hand switch back which turns into a dirt road that runs along the river. From here follow the road until you come to the Parking lot.

Anyone have any info with regard to Cherokee Rock Bluffs Alabama? Hotels/Motels or camping nearby? etc... rockclimbing.com shows 22 routes and I found something on the web for new untouched climbing wall across the river.... Mar 16, 2012

Closest hotel would probably in Auburn,Al about a half hour away. There is camping there next to the river. Drive past the cliff line and you'll see a few spots for camping on the left as the road starts to up hill. I've been over to the other side, i didn't see anything worth fooling with. Sep 26, 2013
Good question! Where did you read that the crag was closed? I know Cherokee Bluffs, TN is closed.... Was thinking about checking it out this weekend. Nov 28, 2013
Went to CB today...disappointed! Most routes are 25 feet high or less. There are bolts all over the place. Most routes have only two/three bolts! Must have 4 x 4 as well if you go after a heavy rain. Don't waste your time and gas...if your going to hit up Bama go to LRC or Jamestown. May 19, 2014
Apparently Chuck has never lived in South Alabama. If you want to avoid a 3+ hour drive to LRC then the 25ft routes area just fine. Jul 18, 2014

Does anyone climb here any longer? Anyone want to check it out tomorrow? Nov 28, 2014
(Any word on access issues or camping here as of late? I'm considering making a quick trip to get some first time climbers from Florida on some real rock and ropes. I've done some trail running in the area, so I understand the tenuous relationship with the power company. PM me if need be.)

Heading there from Florida this weekend pretty much the same situation haha do you want to meet up? Or if you already went were there any access issues? How was the rock? I imagine the area doesn't see to many climbers? Any news or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Jan 27, 2015

Not wise to camp here.
Do yourself a favor and pound out the miles to Palisades or SR. Jan 28, 2015
We have a place to stay mostly looking to see some old friends in the area as well as climb a bit. Also looking for short walk up we have a baby and need fairly decent in out access and to cold for her to camp. Just looking to touch some rock any info and or advice on the area would be really helpful thanks. Jan 28, 2015
Went here yesterday on a whim for a quick day trip as this is the closest rope climbing outdoors to Jacksonville Florida, where I'm from. Genuinely disappointed with the climbing I found there. The trip still came out as a fun adventure/story to tell, but don't waste your time or money going here. Sorry Floridians, but for us there is NO such thing as a 1-day climbing trip. Just can't happen and that really does suck. The routes are not fun to climb, there are random screws in the rock (I assume from old bolts pulled out), the walls are so rarely visited that foliage has entirely taken over, just did not have a good experience with Cherokee Bluffs. Hopefully our trip to Foster Falls later this month will make up for it haha. Jul 8, 2015

I've been going and cleaning up the place. I dug some steps going up to some routes. follow the road and you will come to some wooden steps on your right. you can take a right to a trail that goes over to the middle area that is easier to get up. I have also tried to finish cutting the trail that goes along the bluffs. This is a perfect place to come and climb if your only traveling like 1 1/2 hours. Some routes need to be re-bolted. (Going to work on that in the future). It definitely has potential.. (Update 11-4-16) . I have meet with the founder of the Cherokee Alpine Trail Association and walked along the bluffs and another trail further North. Forever Wild is in the process of acquiring the land that the bluffs are on. There will be hiking trails built along with picnic tables and parking and will become a park as soon as Forever Wild legally owns it. He assured me climbing will be allowed and will be "Climb at your own risk". Oct 28, 2016
anyone live in the area that might want to meet up and climb sometime? I live in Mobile and have a bit of my own equipment but I'm lacking on ropes, cams, things like that. I would love to do some sport routes with someone familiar with them! Jan 19, 2017
Any new information on this climbing site, especially regarding camping?...as in, is it allowed? We want to check it out this weekend, camping Friday night, climbing Saturday day. I just want to make sure we won't get towed or ticketed or anything...I'm assuming just primitive camping - take in, take out policy? Mar 5, 2017

Forever Wild officially owns the property now and has built a parking lot and a kiosk. Climbers are welcome. Nothing about camping has been officially posted. With that being said you shouldn’t be bothered if you slept in your car. No campfires! Please pack up what you take in. I have rebolted a couple of routes and have added some new routes with TR/sport anchors. Jan 10, 2018

I've been there the last two weekends in a row and there have been several locals (Nolan, Jordan, Jason, and others) putting in work. They have really cleaned up the trail and the climbing areas, replaced anchors, reinstalled missing bolts/hangers, and have more plans in the works.

I am currently at Fort Rucker, AL for flight school and CB IS the nearest place I can get on some real rock.

I appreciate the gang's selfless efforts to clean up the area and invite you, HH, to go and take a look.

Happy Climbing! Jan 19, 2018
Great place!!! Nolan and Jordan have been doing so much work. I went earlier in the year and wasn't crazy about the place but I went this past Sunday and OMG its so nice and I love all the new routes. I live only 5 min away so now I can say I'll be coming here a LOT from now on. Jan 23, 2018

A lot of the routes are labeled TR here but not on the map (in photos). Is it possible to set all of the TR routes from up top, via the scramble? I'm considering bringing some friends here but they are new to climbing so I wouldn't be able to get a lead belay. Apr 5, 2018
