Description

Rókahegy (Fox Hill in Hungarian) is an abandoned limestone quarry just outside Budapest. There are close to 80 single pitch bolted sport routes, with new ones being developed every now and then. At the moment 71 routes are listed on the homepage of the Rókahegyi Climbing association, with photo beta and ratings rokahegyisportegyesulet.hu/… The height of the routes varies between 8 and 22 meters (26 to 72 feet). The routes are well equipped with bolts and have chain top-rope anchors.

Climbing is only allowed between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., or sunset, and requires a permit as the quarry is part of a nature reserve. There is a water pump right before the little parking area. This is one of the more popular spots near Budapest and can get busy on the weekends.

Getting There

Take the HÉV commuter rail line to the Csillaghegy stop. You can actually see the lower quarry from here. You'll be standing right at the start of the Ürömi út. Walk up the hill and keep following the Ürömi út until you reach the Rókahegyi út. Follow this to the right until you see a small parking area and a trail leading to the upper quarry.

Local climbers tell us that climbing at Rokahegy is dangerous due to bolting issues. I'm not a native speaker so I'm not sure if that means poorly placed bolts or old/rusted hardware.
We ended up going to another limestone cliff called Kis-svab-hegy. Oct 18, 2017

Hi Chris. I'm really sorry that you couldn't find the crag... I'm not sure how you missed it but I've just added the GPS coordinates to the route description. This way, hopefully anyone will be able to find it easily. Nov 5, 2013

We followed the directions, but couldn't locate the crag. No climbing in Hungary for us. Off to Romanian and climbing for sure. Apr 26, 2012
