Mountain Bouldering Area (MBA) Description

A nice big outcropping of granite just east of Highway 32 and north of Highway W near Mountain, WI. Most of the good stuff is on National Forest land (no access issues). There are at least four distinct regions, East outcrop, North outcrop, South outcrop (the largest), and west Outcrop. Full of short and medium boulder problems—everything from one move wonders to 30ft cranks. Some of the areas definitely require some solid spotters because the talus is pretty rugged and it can be hard to find a flat landing spot for a pad.

Getting There

All routes are north of highway W just east of Mountain, WI. You can park along the highway and hike the 300m or so in to get to the west outcrop. Easiest access to the other spots is via Service Road 2683—take W east to Sunrise Lake Road and follow Sunrise Lake road back West to the Forest Service road. Make sure you have a current forest service map as there is a fair amount of private property in the immediate area.

Hey Daniel, I will be in northern WI for the summer and would love to help you develop this are or Monico a bit more... I'm a good spotter (don't have a pad though-- at least not in America) and have done a fair bit of development in other countries... how can I get hold of you? I'll be staying in Eagle River, thanks, Mike May 26, 2012
Thanks for the info. I spent some time in July up near the area and climbed a bit before rain ruined the rock for the majority of my stay. The area we hung out by mostly was about halfway down on Service Road 2683 off the left side of the road, in about 60 ft. There are a few nice (and easy) lines to climb. Any idea which area this? Very cool to see Daniel, nice work. Paul Jones mentioned to me about some potentially good climbing near Chute Pond, just south of Mountain. You should check that out too and give us a report.

Thanks Chris. Just added a bunch of photos and 2 FAs. Lots more to come throughout the spring/summer. If anyone is interested in helping me develop this area, drop me a line. Mar 18, 2010
