Description

This is the peak just to the right of Half Dome as seen from the Valley. It has a rounded top and a long, low angle Southwest Ridge.

There are old routes on all sides of Grizzly Peak with the most popular being a difficult fourth class line up the Southwest Ridge from the Sierra Point overlook.

Most people descend the gully between the peak and Half Dome with a rope. It is also possible (but more involved than you would think) to descend the peak on its northeast side and reverse to Half Dome approach through the notch between Liberty Cap and Mt. Broderick to the Mist Trail.

Getting There

Walk up the Mist Trail until you reach the interpretive sign about rock piles. Behind the sign, a foot path leads up into the talus. Scramble straight up through the talus and gain a trail continuing uphill. The trail will get steep, then turn right and force an uphill scramble for 30ft or so. Then the trail heads to the right again. Follow this trail as it wraps around to the south side of the peak and the steal rails of the old Sierra Point overlook. You cannot count with two hands the number of waterfalls visible from this point in the spring.
