Getting weather forecast...

Description

This is the large scattered bouldering area located on and below the south slope of South Mountain. There are many top quality problems with huge potential for more in a setting away from the crowds.

(This is just a start to get the area listed. If you have info, please add it. I think we will need an overview map and maybe sub areas)

Getting There

See map
mountainproject.com/v/new_h… Drive in via Reservation Rd, and if the gate is open (otherwise park near it), take a left onto Tower Rd (it says Mountain rd on the map) and in a few hundred yards park on the rt at the junction with Mountain Tr. (Look for #5 on park map) Walk in here and instead of breaking left like you were going to the tower, stay straight (bearing rt.) until you are coming down the south slope of South Mountain. Break left off the dirt track as you just start coming into more hemlocks and before you get to a small marsh on your left, and head basically east with S Mountain on your left and the marsh on your rt. You will first go by more scattered boulders, then the boulders get better, bigger and more clustered. It might take you 10 min from the trailhead to get to the turn off and another 10 to get to the main clusters, with many boulders along the way. Look both up on the slope and down in the hemlocks. There are some great ones hidden down a bit including the huge Mowgli Boulder.

You just didn't go far enough, Andrew. You needed to keep heading along traversing east below the slope. You would pass a few single boulders (down a little more just in the hemlocks) then come to a big cluster ~ 5 min past the Sun Bldr with some ok potential. Pass between that cluster and the slope a few more minutes and you will get to the Yosemite cluster (lots of obvious cracks) There is lots more all around from Yosemite, further along east, upslope and also down into the woods away from the hill. The Mowgli bldr is SE I believe from the Yosemite cluster a few minutes. Most of the best boulders are about 10-15 mins off Mountain Tr. Oct 31, 2016

Went out to find it the other day could only find the sun boulder. I also only saw one piece of pink tape then saw thee green. (Was I so close ? ) I know the ice storm took care of the trail entrance, but we could kinda follow. We came to a spot were we couldn't find the remaining trail or see any boulders. Please tell me I was really close and just didn't go far enough. Aug 10, 2016

There really are some amazing and spectacular lines on these boulders. There's a lot of so so stuff too, but the good lines are really good. The rock quality is much better here than Magic Pond and for the most part the features and angles are more interesting. The hike is also much shorter and pretty easy.

I would guess that most of the lines have been done at one time or another, but everything will feel like a first ascent. The proudest lines are going to require some serious cleaning on rappel but they are definitely worth it. As stated above, bring a sense of adventure and a willingness to work hard cleaning! I went out there this weekend just to look around. I saw some chalk, but a lot of the routes were getting lost to moss again so will need recleaning. It is amazing how fast stuff grows back here in the NE Apr 18, 2011

I would think at least 50, probably more. Ward and Chris Smith, Dave Quinn and I did some development maybe 6 years ago, then I showed Brett and he, Vasya and others put up more routes, particularly on the huge Mowgli boulder. Unfortunately, I had most of my information in a GPS that died before I downloaded it and I can't remember much of who did what or names. I'll need to head out there to refresh my memory. I only named a few of them. Besides the Mowgli boulder, I remember naming the Walrus, Penguin, Ass Boulder. There were also the Yosemite Boulders (lots of cool cracks), Entrance(Sun?) boulder and a bunch of others.
BDalhaus sent me a map of what he had, that I was going to fill in, but I got into going out to Greens etc., so haven't been back to this area, and I haven't been able to get anything from the other guys yet. Maybe in a few weeks I'll run in there and write stuff down. Nov 10, 2010

I don't think I will be able to get back to doing this section any time soon (too many other projects). If somebody would like to take over, just speak to an administrator to switch it over Jun 13, 2010
