DescriptionA remote valley north of Quebec City. In this valley on the cliff of Mont De L'Equerre is the very Famous 1000 foot ice climb named La Pomme D'Or, and the 1500 foot rock climb Redcoats Resurrection. There are many other large crags in this valley first explored around the early 1970's.
You now need a permit to climb la Pomme d'Or, so plan ahead!
Camping in the park is limited to a maximum of eight (8) nights and campsites need to be moved every three (3) days.
As of 2014 camping fees are at $10 a night on top of a $7.50 daily access fee...
Every winter, skilled climbers take on the Pomme dOr, a spectacular and perilous rock face along Rivière Malbaie. For permission to climb this ice wall in the park, youll need an access permit.
Climbers must be in excellent physical condition and totally independent, since the ice wall is about 30 km from the closest telephone and off the parks network of roads and trails. Under good weather conditions, it takes a full day of snowshoeing or off-trail skiing to reach the site.
If you are independent, climbing the Pomme dOr requires a minimum stay of 3 days in the park.
- Day 1: 30 km of snowshoeing or off-trail skiing to get to the foot of the cliff;
- Day 2: climb the ice wall and return to base camp;
- Day 3: 30 km of snowshoeing or off-trail skiing to return to your car.
We strongly recommend bringing a satellite telephone or a SPOT-type emergency message device. There is no emergency telephone on the site in the winter and the cell phone network does not serve the parks territory.
Getting ThereThe nearest town is Saint-Aime-des-Lacs, a village 15 km west of La Malbaie.
you can take the 138 west from La Malbaie then take Rue Principale in Saint-Aime-des-Lacs.
Continue on Rue Principale up to the first gate near Relais des Hautes-Gorges.
If the first gate is open you can keep driving to the second gate 18 km further.
From there on, you better have brought your skis and a sled!
