Siby

International > Africa > Mali > Bamako

Description

Siby is an area of seemingly infinite rock climbing potential. Fortunately a group of very friendly Malians have begun a climbing/tourist community at the base of the cliff formations in this area. These guys have been trained in Chamonix, France and have established many routes on formations throughout the area. The rock quality is very good but is characteristic of any developing area (both the advantages and disadvantages of little route traffic). Currently the routes range from 4+ to 8a+ but there is a huge potential for more climbing including difficult trad climbs.
Although one is technically able to climb here unassisted, it should be noted that by obtaining a guide, one is supporting a unique and small community of African climbers, many of whom earn their livelihood by showing tourists around this area. They have a good knowledge of the terrain and even if one wants to climb something new, they have many suitable suggestions.
