Description

Great Gable 899m is a very popular Mountain for both hikers and climbers. The Famous Napes Needle on the crags of Great Gable was one of the first recorded rock climbs in Britain, climbed solo by WP Heskett Smith in 1886 prior to this climb The Needle Ridge(behind the Needle) was climbed in 1884 again by WP Heskett Smith.The first lady to climb the Needle was in 1890.
Since then about 480 climbs have been recorded on Great Gable from the very easy to E9 (5.14a)The Climbs can be approached both from the Borrowdale Valley (11/2 to 2 hours walk) and from about the same time from the Wasdale Valley.

Getting There

From Seathwaite in the Borrowdale Valley about 8 miles from Keswick,or from Wasdale Head pub at the top of the Wasdale Valley. Rock Climb descriptions in the FRCC Gable and Pillar guide book.
