Description

A very steep crag with many star routes. The modern fashion of climbing only one pitch routes and sport climbing has led to the neglect of these higher multi pitch crags also anything over a 10 minute hike is a deterrent . However moves to reclean up these fine crags maybe in the works. It was in 1910 when some revolting gullies were climbed on the right side of the crag.It was not until 1946 that Bill Peascod came on the climbing scene and produced on the main face the Great Stair and Falconer's Crack both VS (5.7/8).Over nine years went by before other climbs were pioneered first the 5.7 Green Wall by Mike Thompson and Peter Lockey and next in 1956 the renowned Post Mortem crack was climbed.Named Post Mortem as a couple of weeks before Paul Ross and Peter Lockey made the successful first ascent Don Whillans had fell off and failed on the overhung offwidth crack now graded E3 5c (5.10d).This was the first climb of that grade in the Lake District and in most of Britain, and still has the reputation of having more failures than successes. There are now over 30 climbs on the main face ranging from 5.7 (VS) to 5.13c (E8).

Getting There

From Keswick drive about 6 miles down the valley to the small village of Stonethwaite. From here one can see on the right side of the valley the silhouetted steep face of Eagle crag. About a hours walk.
