There are more than 20 climbing areas in the Schwarzwald. Sharing tectonic birth with the Vosges Mountains, the Scwarzwald consists of gneiss and granite capped by sandstone. The mountains are heavily wooded and appear similar to the Appalachians.
Northern areas are around Baden-Baden, Southern around Freiburg.

The Schwarzwald is a part of the continental divide, the Rhine going to the Atlantic, and the Donau to the Black Sea. The rivers coming less than 30 miles from each other.

Getting There Suggest change

Freiburg is a major port of journey for tourists to the area. Full of history and fable, Freiburg sits in the middle of many climbing areas. Though Baden-Baden has also a high concentration of good climbing, and healing waters to accompany them.
