Description

Welcome to the land of Käsespätzle, Maultaschen and Gummibears! Located in south-west Germany and bordering France, Switzerland and Austria, Baden-Württemberg (BW) is one of the richest state's in Germany. It is most famously known as being the home of major German companies such as Daimler (Mercedes), Porsche and Bosch, all of which were founded in Stuttgart.

Geographically, BW boasts no major mountains but its rolling hills and many days of sun (for German standards at least) make it home to endless vineyards. On its southern border lies Lake Konstanz (Bodensee) which has plenty of climbing opportunities scattered around it.

The ancient hot spring spas of Baden-Baden are a major tourist attraction in Baden-Württemberg, as well as Lake Konstanz. Lake Konstanz, is a swelling of the Rhein, due to being trapped in a tectonic basin. Two important rivers lie in BW: the source of the Danube(Donau)river, and the falls of the Rhine lie a mere 27 miles from eachother. They are separated by the continental divide, the Rhein flowing to the north sea, and the Danube flowing to the Black Sea.

Yet, despite its seemingly modest landscape and geography BW has hundreds of crags and is second only to Bavaria for amount of climbing.

There are several major areas: Schwarzwald (Black Forest), Schwäbische Alb (Swabian Jura), Donautal (Danube valley), Blautal (Blue Valley) and the BW section of Odenwald (Oden Forest).

If you can read German, make sure to pick up guidebooks from Panico Verlag, available in any bookstore or online, which cover the state in very fine detail. Additionally, the German Alpine Association (DAV) has an excellent crag map with extensive information available at: felsinfo.alpenverein.de/
