Tobacco Root Mountains

Montana > Southwest Region

Description

In the Climber's Guide to Montana, Caffrey describes this range thus: "A compact plateau with concentrated peaks of the same general elevation. Loose fractured rock from top to bottom. Elevation span 6400'."

Fairly off-the-beaten-path area, with old, dark metamorphic rock.

A number of high, craggy peaks to explore with old remnants of mining exploration.

Located southeast of Butte. East of Twin Bridges, west of Norris, north of Virginia City, and bounded on the north by the Jefferson River and I-90.

Getting There

Typical approach into the area is up Mill Creek Road out of Sheridan.

[Hide Comment] A handful of quality problems in the Tobacco Roots above the small town of Pony. These and many more can be found in SW MT Blocs: A Bouldering Guide to Southwest Montana (swmtblocs.com).
