Description Suggest change

While Wendelstein is not as impressive a peak as the Watzmann or Alpspitze, it does hold wonderful views that transportation companies have put to use. Take the oldest cogwheel train in Deutschland, which starts in Brannenburg. It opened in 1912 (cars have since been replaced), and is a stunning ride clinging to the side of cliffs and cutting through 8 tunnels (30 minutes/25euros). Or take the equally stunning cable-tram (seven minutes/18euros), one of the longest in Germany at 2,95 km in length and with only one 75 meter support tower. The cable-tram station is in Bayrischzell. For lovebirds or churchgoers, go to services or get married in the stone chapel built in 1890 near the summit. Skiing is good in the winter, and climbing is great in the summer. There are at least six established crags near the summit. Some routes are bolted, some are trad.

CAVE: Wendelstein Cave is 300m deep and has a coin operated revolving door (1E)
Observatory: In the summer, on the first thursday of every month, the university observatory is open by special arrangement.

STAY: There is a hostel outside Bayerischzell: jugendherberge.de/jh/bayern…
