Description

Mt. Kinesava is the large mountain south of West Temple, it forms the western skyline of Springdale and presents the long Cowboy Ridge looking north from Rockville running down and left above the Springdale band.

You can bet you will be the only one up on this awe inspiring mountain. Expect a bunch of sun and steep, great loose rock with excellent route finding opportunities both up and down.

There is a beautiful prickly pear meadow between the south sub-peak and the highest point. The hike from the meadow up to the top is easy 3rd class, but loose and should take less than 15-20 minutes. Great views of West Temple's west face and south ridge.

The main attractions are the long, moderate Cowboy Ridge that ascends the south ridge and the steep southwest and northwest faces which are home to long, hard, free and aid climbs.

Please try to minimize disturbing the pristine nature of this mountain. Avoid making cairns, is your path better than the way others have gone? Following ridges or the arroyo bottoms often have the best developed trails on the approaches and minimize climber's impacts.

Please carry out your toilet paper!
Seasonal Raptor Closures ***** RAIN AND WET ROCK ***** The sandstone in Zion is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Holds rip off and climbs have been and will continue to be permanently damaged due to climbers not respecting this phenomenon. After a heavy storm the rock will remain wet, sometimes for several days. PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB IN ZION during or after rain. A good rule of thumb is that if the ground near your climb is at all damp (and not powdery dry sand), then do not climb. There are many alternatives (limestone, granite, basalt, and plastic) nearby. Getting There

Drive the highway west from Springdale to Rockville. Just east of Rockville, turn right, (north) into the Anasazi Place Subdivision on Anasazi Way. This is paved and 9 mph speed limit. A short way up is a sign pointing to hiker parking at the bottom of a steep right turn. Park here and find the trail head "Chick Trail" leading northwest through the houses.

Pass several over-sized houses that seem out of place in the wilderness to eventually reach the Chinle Trail head. This trail head is well marked. Be respectful and quiet taking the time to stay on the trail.

From here, the 3rd class southeast face, the easiest route to the summit and the route of descent should take about 4 hours to the meadow on the top. Using the same route as a descent will take about 3 hours, maybe longer if you came up a different way.

Bring a bunch of water.
