Wolf Rock is located within the Joshua Land Trust. See joshuastrust.org/wolf-rock-… for more information. It has two distinct cliffs, the Upper Tier and the Lower Tier.

Both of these are relatively short - about 30 to 40 feet. I'm not certain about the rock type, but it seems like gneiss and is similar in characteristic to Rose Ledges in western Massachusetts. There are some slabs, vertical cracks, as well as some larger horizontal cracks. The rock quality is good. The Upper Tier rock is very clean but the Lower Tier is a bit dirty due to runoff after rain.

The Upper Tier is sunny and has the easier routes (5.1 to 5.6). The Lower Tier is more shaded and has more challenging routes (5.2 to 5.9+). Both cliffs offer relatively easy top rope setups provided you bring some long webbing or trad gear. There are a number of trees that can be used as well as one huge metal eyebolt at the top of Upper Tier. Some of the climbs are leadable with decent protection.

The approach to the cliffs is about a five minute walk from the road on the blue blazed Nipmuck trail. You will end up at a balanced boulder on the top of the Upper Tier cliff. It's possible to descend on either side of the cliff to the base, but it's probably easier to go towards the right (with your back towards the approach trail and the parking). To get to the Lower Tier cliff, follow the trail from about the center of the Upper Tier.

After climbing, you can wolf down some delicious wings and beer at Bidwell Tavern.

Take I84 to Rt 195 South. Follow Rt 195S through the UConn campus and keeping going towards Mansfield Center. Turn right on Brown's Road. Follow for one mile until the fork in the road and take the left onto Crane Hill Rd. After about 0.15 miles on Crane Hill Rd, look for a pullout and park (Google 36 Crane Hill Rd Mansfield CT). You should see a sign for Joshua's Conservation and Historic Trust on your left. Parking on Crane Road at 41.760467, -72.216850.

Follow the blue blazed Nipmuck trail for about 1/4 mile.
