Description Suggest change

If you are in Berchtesgaden, and facing South, the Göllstock (or Göll Massiv) is the obvious range to the East, that includes the Kehlstein (Eagles Nest). Göllstock is an interesting Y formation at the end of the Berchtesgadener range, on the border of Austria. In the crotch of the Y resides the Umgänge, the high plateau schooling with amazing deep grooves and caves masoned by the glaciers that once called this plateau home. The salt mountain sits underneath this massive formation with a mine still in operation and running fun tours.

CLIMBING: The climbing here is limestone, it is capping dolomite which can be found in places. The highest point is the Hohe Göll at 2522m (8274 ft). There are several spires with challenging climbing in the Umgänge area.

CAVING: Spelunking at the Kuchler comb has been securely developed, and you may be able to find a local guide in Berchtesgaden. The area may be prone to flash floods in the Combs underneath the Umgänge, further justifying the cost of a local guide.

Mountain refuges: Purtschellerhaus (1,692 m), Carl-von-Stahl-Haus (1,733 m).

Getting There Suggest change

From Berchtesgaden, go east on the 319 to Obersalzberg, at the traffic-circle, turn onto Sharitzkehlstrasse. Park either at the Sharitzkehlalm or up the road at the parking for the Jenner and Jennerbahn.
