Getting weather forecast...

Small concentrations of quality boulder problems on good sandia granite.

Getting There

Take Tramway to Simms park road (first right north of Academy). You may see the signs for Elena Gallegos picnic area. Drive up to pay station (one dollar on weekdays, two on weekends) and follow the loop parking around to the easternmost lot.
From here take the primary trail heading east until you reach the Fence for the Pino trail (about 15 minutes). There should be some rocks just above you on the right. To reach the main area head south west around the mound to an obvious drainage. For the upper area go through the fence and walk up trail about 100 ft and you should see a brown post on your right. Walk back through the grass to gain some cairns. Follow cairns and faint trail to the boulders.
I will post a map in the near future.

Nice job out there boys. The directions to the Upper area are a bit difficult to follow. Is there really a small sign? A small sign post? The lower area was easy to find. Does this mean we have to all start sharing our secret foothills boulders? Jan 18, 2011

No way Eric, the Ace of Spades area will remain totally off-limits forever. You have enough foothills mojo to find the upper area despite the necessarily vague directions. Up the hill and follow the cairns (which all were there a month ago when I took Kear and Parker) until you find the big chunks. Lower stuff is super compact and fun. Jan 18, 2011
Good call. If we shared that info Bryan would probably go out of business. I can already see the cars leaving the gym at breakneck speeds to be the first to sample those obscure foothills classics. Jan 19, 2011

The myuctv link died.... I have been exploring this area a lot lately and would be interested to see the video. Thanks for posting all this info as well, the areas are beautiful and the climbing superb. It takes work to find boulders, gratitude. Nov 2, 2012

I got lost on Saturday, by looking at the description I think I approached wrong. I took pino trail to wilderness fence then went right on a steep trail that took me up to 2 highball cracks. Are these boulders on pino trail aka trail 140? I was shooting for the main area. Sep 30, 2013
