Description Suggest change

The outback meets the Indian Ocean at the sleepy settlement of Coral Bay, about 1300 km north of Perth. Its primary attraction is actually the Ningaloo Reef, Australias only fringing reef. As a result of this reef, there is an ancient band of coral that lies just above the beach, starting right at the southern end of the main beach, and continuing south for miles. This band of coral makes for excellent bouldering with either nice soft sandy landings, or water landings.

Coral Bay has exactly 1 bar, 1 gas station and 1 mechanic. There are a variety of lodging options here, the best of which are some houses on the north side of the road. These require reservations before arrival. Then there is the entire outback just east of town. If you're camping, Maud's Landing offers a choice beachfront location.

Getting There Suggest change

From Perth, head for the Tropic of Capricorn, and hang a left just after you pass it. Take the West Coastal Highway (1) north until shortly after you pass the Minilya Roadhouse. Turn left at the Exmouth/Learmonth turn-off. Follow the signs.
You can also fly from Perth to Learmonth, with a brief stop at Shark's Bay "airport", a tin shack with a sign and 4 chairs. There is a shuttle service to Coral Bay.
