Coffin Crack Crag

Colorado > Gunnison > Taylor Canyon

Description

Awesome splitter cracks in taylor canyon upriver from Harmels. Rock here is the same as first buttress, granite. Good stuff.

Getting There

To get to coffin crack, drive a little ways past PCP pinnicle until you see a tyrolean across the taylor river. Park in a pullout near the tyrolean. Cross the tyrolean using a pulley (the tyrolean is up high in the trees so be careful climbing up to it). Once on the other side of the river, hike about 1/2 mile to the east until you spot the "Coffin" in the rock, that is your target.

[Hide Comment] There is apparently a roped tyrolean that is right next to the coffin. Pull off the road when you see the coffin and cross the river via the tyrolean. This eliminates the need to take the cable wire high in the tree. Sep 17, 2009

[Hide Comment] The roped tyrolean(s) are no longer in place (or I could not find them), but the high wire is still present. Jun 10, 2010

[Hide Comment] The river is no more than calf deep at the right spot (about 100m up stream from the Coffin). Oct 12, 2012
