Description

**As of October 2018 Kootenai climbing is temporarily closed while legal issues are discussed and finalized. Please respect this temporary request as climbing here while closed will result in it's permanent closure.

Granite sport and trad climbing, mostly single pitch but some multipitch too. Routes range from 5.6 to 5.13, and everything from crack climbing to steep roofs. This is the closest crag to Missoula and has very short approaches, nothing over 15 mins. The south side of the canyon is shady in the summer, the north side can get very hot. Something climbable in most seasons.

Getting There

Take highway 93 south out of Missoula for about 25. Just before entering Stevensville take a right on Kootenai creek road. Follow this for a few miles to the trailhead parking lot. The main trail is located on the north side of the canyon. Most crags are on the north side, except outermost limits and booty buttress. Find the trails heading up from the main trail to get to the climbs.

Just added a welded cold shut to an empty stud on Moses. I have another top anchor with 2 empty studs over at Drummond to put either chains or welded cold shuts on. Anyway, wrote in the Butte guidebook in wrote about the missing bolt hangers. At Mulkey Tower on the first bolt on LINK-UP I put a welded cold shut on a empty stud about a dozen years ago. It is still there. Anyway, if you are stealing bolt hangers for your routes I wouldn't take the welded cold shuts, use them on bolts and then publish your name on a first ascent. As best of what I have seen, I'm the only one replacing stolen bolt hangers with welded cold shut so it will be pretty obvious you are the thief if a welded cold shut is used. Or if we record who climb every route in Western Montana and don't every find your name on the routes with welded cold shuts - we will know who did it. Oct 2, 2017
