International > Asia > Mongolia

Terelj is located about 50km northeast of the capital of Mongolia, Ulaan Baatar. It has bolted climbing, but only a few routes. There are probably hundreds more face lines that could be bolted for those with the desire. There are also many flaring cracks for the trad oriented. Rock here is variable. The crystals are typically large and sharp. The rock is sometimes crumbly, and new routes will probably need significant cleaning.

Camping is cheap and easy here, but there are tourist ger camps available. There is even a four star hotel in the more touristy area of the park.

Getting There

About a 45 minute drive from UB. You can take a public minibus, which will probably cost less than a dollar. Approaches to climbs are usually short, but next to nothing if you have a 4WD vehicle.

[Hide Comment] This area has so many rocks it has the potential of Joshua tree.I find that it is often crack climbing up rounding tops, but if you look in the corners, strange angles, and towards the back (north) of the park there are also some fantastic harder climbs (of the 5.11 to possibly 13). I will try to get some new routs written up that are fantastic and maybe less obvious than the big cracks near the tourist camps. There is also unlimited fantastic bouldering (That actually what I have enjoyed most in terelj). Nov 27, 2012
