Hunter's Rocks (Rocky Ridge Natural Area)

Pennsylvania > Central PA
Warning Access Issue: Avoid private land on approach to public areas DetailsDrop down

Description

Hunter's Rocks is mostly on state game lands and partly in the Rocky Ridge Natural Area. A small closed section is on private land, so respect this and help preserve access to the public areas. When you see the first boulders at the top of the trail, the private section is down a small trail to the left. The public section is everything to the right and along the ridge. This area has seen active development since the 1950s. While many original route names and first ascents are lost to history, there is still excellent bouldering at Hunter's Rocks.Eric Heiden shared an excellent Google Maps guide of the area:Google Maps guide;msa=0

Getting There

The coordinates here will get you driving directions to the main parking lot on Frew Road.

Since you will approach on or near Pennsylvania State Game lands, be sure to wear orange when it's hunting season.

Bat Conservation | How You Can Help

See a Bat on a Route, Give Us a Shout!

Hey climbers, one of our SCPC members is working with Rob Schorr at Colorado State to help him spread the word about his bat research. Here’s a message from him about this important work and how, we as climbers, can help.

"Climbers for Bat Conservation is working with climbers to understand bat ecology and why bats choose certain cracks and flakes. We’re a collaboration between climbers, bat biologists, and land managers to understand where bats roost and where large populations may reside. We are interested in finding bats because of a new disease called white-nose syndrome (whitenosesyndrome.org) which has killed millions of bats in North America. This collaboration has identified bat roosts throughout the U.S., and as far away as Norway and Bulgaria. CBC was developed by biologists who climb and they are advocates for climbing access and bat conservation.

So, if you see bats while climbing, please let us know by emailing us at climbersforbats@colostate.edu, or visiting our website to learn more. climbersforbats.colostate.edu."

Thank You!
Rob Schorr

[Hide Comment] I'd like to populate this guide with the climbs on Public land (Mojo is on private property). To do this I'd appreciate if the admins could create 3 subsections: the main area (standard american accent and surrounding boulders), the power cut, and a small area I did some developing in, further northeast up the ridgeline - dubbed "The Oaks."

I'd be happy to do the work if someone could make me an admin for the area.

For the meantime here is my google-maps guide of the area:

[Hide Comment] Hey Eric, thanks for writing up these routes! I'll divide them up as you asked when I get to a desktop PC (off in phone limbo now). If you want to be an admin permanently let me know, and I'll pass it on to the site owners. Otherwise I'm glad to do this one time sort. Thanks! Dec 6, 2011

[Hide Comment] Justin - I'd love to become an administrator for Hunters. I'm not longer in the area but I'm active on MP and have a fair amount of information piled away in my brain about Hunters. I'd love to see more people on the public land climbs out there. Dec 22, 2011

[Hide Comment] Hey Eric, I think MP's admins prefer to keep the admin structure as simple as possible, except for really massive individual climbing areas. Interested in being a PA co-admin? Heh.

I transferred ownership of the new areas I created to you. Have at it, and let me know how I can help. Jan 26, 2012

[Hide Comment] Mojo @ Hunters was put up by Randy Burks circa '88 (or earlier)
He and I added the sit sometime shortly after that. Come to think of it, we did quite a few routes that never got recorded, and thence renamed, regraded, etc. Don't really care too much about that, but I do care about guidebook authors just randomly making stuff up rather than doing WORK and RESEARCH before going to press. I know, that's crazy talk, but it would be nice to see effort put forth.

Sorry 'bout the rant.

[Hide Comment] I'm gonna be heading up towards state college to pick up my organic crash pad I ordered. So I thought while I'm up there I might aswell make it a weekend trip and climb at hunters rocks. Anyone want to show me around while I'm up there? I'm not sure, but I think it will be a weekend in mid February. Thanks. Jan 5, 2014
[Hide Comment] I'm going to be in the area but I cannot travel with a crash pad. Is there anywhere nearby where one can rent a pad? Jun 30, 2014

[Hide Comment] Ian Fenimore you may want to make your own site... looks like a lot of things aren't listed like petunia v4, the good times boulder dyno, sunset boulder, knob gobblin (eric harrison), inverted cripples and the powerband extension... and on and on.... Jul 13, 2017
