The Goliath Boulder

Washington > Northwest Region > San Juan, Fidal… > Mt Erie > * Bouldering at Mt Er…

Getting There

Park at the base of Erie near the store. There is a white gate blocking an old road at the trailhead for trail 248. this is the traditional way to most of the lower climbing on Erie. A short way up the trail that follows the fence on the right and you'll see a faint trail on the left. Follow it up and under the power lines and you'll see the boulder in the trees beyond the clearing.

Description

Possibly the best boulder this side of Gold Bar. there are several easy problems and at least two VERY hard lines to be had. The original guide book left the hardest face out completely.

[Hide Comment] Great job on this boulder and thanks for the pics! It’s a real gem isn’t it?! Doesn’t look like either of the versions of Donkey Punch in this vid are correct though. I believe you need to start The problem further right and go up to the right hand lip. Check my pics. Keep crushing. Jul 12, 2020

[Hide Comment] Thanks! I definitely agree that that is not the described version of donkey punch. I still haven't found a way to do it without going to the arete. straight up seems more in the v6 range. maybe a hold broke? i definitely meant it to say "variation" in the video, but i forget lots of stuff in my life...

will release an update when my wife does "6 cubits" and I do something I'm working on... Jul 12, 2020
[Hide Comment] Donkey Punch V4 goes to the crimp below the big arete rail with the left hand instead of the right. If you hit the crimp with the right hand it forces you to use the arete and makes the problem easier (v2/3?). If you hit it with the left you can grab the slopey pinch with your right and avoid the big arete rail. It's an eliminate but too good to pass up! Aug 3, 2020

[Hide Comment] In the video it states Donkey Punch with the Arete, doesn't claim to be one originally put up, plus the starting hold for that problem definitely broke. Thanks to IJMayer for all the work going into the beta video. Aug 7, 2020

Here's my wife doing the v4 version of Donkey Punch 2 days ago, as well as some other routes. The last 2 are not on MP so I made up the names and grades myself. Please let me know if they already have been established! I'm not trying to claim any FAs for the glory, I just love to open up new problems when I can add to the area. Aug 10, 2020

This boulder is super awesome, and I will definitely be back to check off more of the problems I didn't have time to try! Sep 23, 2022

[Hide Comment] There is currently a football sized hornets nest above the boulder. Seems okay to climb most of the problems, but be careful to not bump the branch it's attached to. Jun 25, 2023
