Routes in The Yosemite Boulder Area

Description

This upstream cluster of boulders generally provides exciting highball problems like Yosemite Arete (V5), Keep It Subtle (V5-6) and Kalbro (V3), but there are a bunch of shorter problems as well such as NRA (V2-3) and Bloody Knuckles (hard V5). The Yosemite Boulder, the tallest boulder in the area, is home to numerous classics and hikers regularly scramble up the obvious chimney to stand at its peak. Years ago, a sizeable chunk of rock broke off, destroying some of the old classics. For those seeking something difficult, check out Ceadas (V11) or what's left of Gunshow (V8). This area also includes the classic Bulletproof (V6) which is a shorter super slopey problem, and a number of projects.

Getting There

From the zoo head upstream past Fritz Demise (V0) towards the tallest boulder you see. That’s the Yosemite boulder and the problems surround it. You have to pass it on your way to Devil’s Den

May be old news by now, but the big tree right next to Gun Show has fallen, taking out the little tree next to Bulletproof and complicating the downclimb off Kalbro. Sep 21, 2010

Thanks Bryce. Haven't really looked at the new guide, so all I knew was it wasn't in the old edition. Sep 30, 2009

Julian, that problem is called Keep It Subtle (aka Rainbow Mist). It's in Kemple's latest guide with a completely different name, but it was climbed in the 80's then recleaned and renamed by Brett about a year ago. Those slopers in the crux are horrible. Sep 30, 2009

Does it start with a weird undercling and move up to a dish that you mantel with an easy but tall traversing top out? If so it's like a party trick v3, once you get it you always can. Sep 30, 2009

Was at P'way on Saturday and worked a pretty cool problem to the right of Standard Direct and to the left of the line of old bolts. Don't know if it has a name, but it felt V5ish. Photo of me screwing it up here: flickr.com/photos/23874488@N03/3966295527/ Sep 29, 2009
