Description

This area has fun bouldering. What these boulders lack in quantity, they make up for in quality. There are several great problems on good stone. It is good almost year round.

Getting There

Take the New Castle exit (#105) off I-70, and head north into town. Go straight through the four-way intersection, and follow this street through residential areas until it intersects with County Road 245 at a T intersection. A few miles outside of town, take a right on County Road 241 (East Elk Creek). You'll also see signs for a KOA. There is a parking pullout 0.3 mile up the road on the right. Hike back the way you came until you see a faint trail heading uphill, directly across from a driveway with a metal gate. You can also park on the left side of the road before the trail, but please don't park in the driveway, it's private property. Follow the trail as it cuts to the right and follows a small water pipe. At a cement foundation for a canal leading to a pipe, head uphill to the boulders.

There is the end of the road boulder that Mike is talking about, and there is a lot more granite back there. I'm game to go on an exploring mission before we get shut down this season, lemme know! Sep 27, 2017

At the end of the old Forest Service road up East Elk, which is no longer maintained, there is a large granite boulder that from time to time over the years would sport some chalk. There were a few easier looking problems on the creekside and a cool looking overhanging north face. Other boulders in the area looked like they had some potential as well and I always heard of climbing here and there on boulders in the area, but I don't think it's extensive. Sep 26, 2017
Any beta on the granite stones up East Elk then? Sep 25, 2017

I believe you would have to cross private land to get to the boulders?

Also to address Molly's comment, I've never had an issue with my car being towed, and the boulders are def just right there roadside. If you are looking more than 15 minutes you aren't in the right place. You can literally see the boulders on the hillside if you are approaching from Rifle. Sep 14, 2017
Anyone know anything about the potential boulders between Main and West Elk Roads behind those fields. It looks like it is public lands there and has some stone. Aug 24, 2017
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: pretty sure these boulders do not exist. Couple buddies and I spent an hour trying to locate them, only coming up short. Came back to the car to find that it was about to be towed even though it was parked in a pulloff.

Our theory: a towing company put up these non-existent climbs on MP. They lull climbers into parking off the street so that they can get towed and make money. Only recommend this "bouldering area" if you prefer a never-ending approach and getting your car towed. Oct 11, 2016
