DescriptionA nice ice crag with a short approach, Peoples State Forest offers a variety of lines from WI2-4 in a sunny setting. This is a great beginner's area since it has a variety of independent lines of moderate difficulty.
If you're not up to leading, all of the routes can be easily top roped off trees by walking left (some WI1 approach ice) up the summer trail to the top of the cliff. Some of the trees are close to the edge, so use appropriate caution getting to them.
Between the main falls and the canyon's pillars are a couple of fun mixed lines that are good traditional leads when conditions are fat.
Getting ThereGet to Winsted, CT.
From the Highway 8/Highway 44 instersection in Winsted, go east on Hwy 44 for about 3 miles to a left turn onto Hwy 318/Ripley Hill Road. Drive about 3/4 mile to the first stop sign. Go straight across the metal bridge. Then take an immediate left onto "East River Road" and drive about 2 miles to a plowed pullout on the left that is signed "Jesse Gerard Trail." The ice will be visible up and right from here as you drive in. There is room for at least 8 cars if people park appropriately.
Cross the road and hike about 3 minutes to the base of the routes.
