Description

Nice ! Above the "Stairs" main cliffs. Really nice view and good rock. Leads and tr's about 60-80' also a GREAT place to camp at the very top.

Getting There

Stairs Col trail to the top, the bear right for a couple of minutes at the "lookout" sign. There used to be a spring with good water alittle ways down the trail

Was up there a couple/three yrs ago and hiked up to the top lookout on Up Stairs. Figured we'd drop down a rope to TR Rosebud, maybe lead some of the others listed in Handren's then-newish guidebook.

Seems we were a bit off base and rapped down the left-hand side. Nice looking rock...fairly clean, lichen easily brushable, some weathered holds but nothing unexpected in a 'mountain' environment, sandy ledge to walk around on. It was only about 45-50 ft high. Did the 'central' crack (about 5.7+), and a couple of other lines. Had a good time.

After that, moved climber's right at the top and set up a line to look down over the edges; THAT's where the climbs in the book are located. I'd gotten "faked out" by the line in Handren that made it sound like from the viewpoint it was just a matter of rapping down. No, you have to go skier's left (climber's right) my notes say " I think the 80 ft cliff is 50 ft [skier's] left and 30 ft down from where the trail ends [at the viewpoint]. Aug 18, 2017

Hiked up yesterday to try the climbs... We went the Davis Path way, so it was a fun hike. The climbing is less than stellar. There was a 5.8 crack climb which my partner led, and it was cool but overall this is not a worthwhile destination. You can rappel down and mess around, maybe boulder a bit or free solo up some easy stuff, but for this one tiny 40' area it's not great. The rock was very sharp and coarse, and was almost sandy/gritty. Probably not even worth having up as a section, but I will defer.

That being said, in looking at the photo overview, we may have been unable to inspect the entirety of the cliff.... We may have missed a couple of the climbs... From my perspective at the time, there was a ton of broken up and non-protectable strange face climbs at a low grade, and accessing all of the rock was tricky because the top of the cliff was all steep bushwhack for finding a rap .... I don't know, take my comments for what you will but I was not too thrilled about the possibilities here. Sep 21, 2015
