Description
The Garden State offers a wide array of climbing on a variety of different rock types. From Palisades diabase to Watchung basalt to the purple conglomerate of Green Pond Mt, the granite of Allamuchy, to the metaquartzite of Delaware Water Gap, there is an enormous amount of rock to be climbed.
Multi-Pitch--Delaware Water Gap, on the western side of the state, holds many multi-pitch rock routes on rock similar to the Gunks.
Ice--Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area also offers ice climbing on both the NJ and PA sides.
There are three guidebooks for the area:
1. Garden State Climbing by Joseph Vulpis which is a history of NJ climbing dating back to 1910 and a guidebook of legal climbing areas.
2. Rock Climbing & Bouldering New Jersey. First Edition 2019. Second Edition 2023. Available from Next Ascent Guidebooks. A full-color, comprehensive guidebook to both climbing and bouldering in NJ also includes Powerlinez in NY + Ralph Stover in PA.
3. Rock Climbing: New Jersey by Paul Nick and Neil J.A.Sloane, published by Falcon Press. It has some good topos and photos, especially for Delaware Water Gap.
