Description

Many parts of this area are shady all day long, some are even in cave-like areas. When I was there it wasn’t very crowded – only saw one other couple climbing all day. Sometimes people walk up from the park to look around, but just spectators.

The rock is nice. A mix of english-muffin cragginess and smooth candle-dripping laybacks. One of the climbers that gave us beta at the Aventuras Tierra Adentro said it was similar to Red Rocks, but I haven't climbed there so I can’t compare.

Getting There

The crags are in the park Julio Enrique Monagas in the municipality of Bayamón.

From San Juan get on Highway 22 West. Take exit 10 to Road 5. Stay in the right lane and take the first exit. At the stop sign, make a left to Road 28 (also known as GOYA Road). Cross a traffic light and turn right after the GOYA warehouse. Go straight through the first intersection and the park's gate is immediately on your left.

After the park gate, cross the parking lot and make two rights to a second parking lot between playgrounds and gazebos. Park here.

From the parking lot, hike up the tar road that heads towards the woods.

Take the trail marked with a cairn (a stack of rocks) and a carabiner sign between two bunkers. When you come out into a clearing or open area, keep hiking straight up. After the uphill left bend of the road, you will see two trails on your right side. (5-10 min.)

Take the first trail and you'll shortly find yourself at the first few sectors. From the first sectors, continue west to reach the rest of the sectors.

My wife and I just took a nice little trip to Puerto Rico in March and I called Aventuras Tierra Adentro before I went. They already had plans to climb at Nuevo Bayamon (Bayamon 2) on the day I mentioned so they were super nice and invited us along since we didn't really need the whole guide thing.

Rossano and Edda have done a lot of work developing the sport climbing at Bayamon 2. The approach is physically easy but finding the areas would take more time without a local. There are a few signs with a carabiner logo on them to point the way. Parque Julio Enrique Monagas is also a mountain biking area, so there are lots of side trails. By the way driving in PR can be tricky, we learned when trying to find the Aventuras climbing shop that you can't really go by street address since their address is found in more than one building on the same major avenue.

There are dozens of nicely bolted climbs, in 9 sectors. Little wooden bridges and stairs leading to some areas. I recommend downloading the PDF guide put together by Aventuras, it is pretty good already and they have plans to update it. It is humid and sweaty there, but lots of shade, and lizards. Rossano Boscarino also has an impressive climbing background, he's done some speed ascents in Yosemite with Hans Florine, and Rossano and Edda obviously love climbing. Bayamon 2 is a great crag and they are trying to promote it to get more traffic, partly to keep the vegetation under control.

I wouldn't really compare it to Red Rocks as mentioned above, since it is drippy crazy looking limestone, instead of the hard sandstone that I think of at Red Rocks. Bring 12-14 draws and enjoy. Apr 10, 2010
I'm visiting in Puerto Rico until May 10 and was wondering if anyone wants to hook up to go out. I'm staying in Ocean Park, email me at bebforman@gmail to make plans. Apr 20, 2011

I put together a little guide from a recent trip to Puerto Rico. Check it out if you are looking for info for planning a trip.

there are tons of routes here and if you go you must visit the climbing store before you go. they had a mini guide book and are working on a new one as I write this. here is the link to the store. hopefully by the time you head over there the new book will be out. Edda and Rosano are the most helpful climbers you will meet. They pretty much maintain the routes up there so they know it all.
