Description

Sleeping Giant has the potential to be one of the biggest and best traprock areas in CT, and it's legal! The rock quality can be outstanding and the type of rock lends itself to a huge variety of interesting climbs. There are highballs, low balls, great easy climbs and double digit projects. The trails are well worn and marked and the trail map allows you to easily find most areas.

So, would i be correct in guessing that by this places namesake, the boulder/boulders here are huge and highball? or is there a massive cliff that is the giant? Jun 6, 2010

Checked this area out... it was fairly limited but still offered some bouldering possibility. it was a beautiful area of the park i had never been to before with nice afternoon light. But it was just one small cliff 10-20 feet high, slippery traprock holds, and about 50 feet wide. no standalone boulders though. does anyone know of any other boulders elsewhere in the park ? its near my house... There are a few boulders at the north end of West Rock that need to be climbed. This is within a mile or two of Sleeping Giant. I'd love to get out there with a spot sometime. Apr 26, 2011

There is a very nice bouldering spot right off of the white trail (right side if you are headed out from the main parking lot). Plenty of unclimbed rock. There were spots of chalk on a few boulders.

Sleeping Giant has the potential to be a great bouldering area for those in southern central CT. It's legal, it has great trails that provide easy access to the climbing, the rock is great and there is a significant amount of bouldering, some of which is very good. I'm guessing people have done a lot of the obvious lines so I'm adding them as "unknowns". Apr 18, 2016
Due to the tornados that hit Hamden CT, Sleeping Giant State Park will be closed, assumptions are at least until Fall 2018. The devastation is insane, and there will be no access to any climbing sites (this isn't a lame rule cause of a few widowmakers, you literally could not get to the climbing areas if you tried). The Sleeping Giant Park Association (can be found on facebook) will have updates as to when the park with re-open. May 24, 2018
