Description

The most popular area on Mt Tammany, containing the two most accessible climbs on the cliff, The Rib, 5.3, and Triumvirate, 5.4.  There are many variations and linkups possible on the climbs on this wall, and many can easily be linked into long single pitches.  A standard Gunks rack is sufficient.  Many climbs end at (or can be ended at) a 2 bolt anchor on Triumvirate, just right of the obvious cedar 20' from the cliff top.

Descents:

From the Triumvirate Anchor: A 180' double rope rappel is required, there is no mid-wall anchor.  20' of 5.0 climbing reaches the cliff top.

From the very top, a 160' double rope rappel is recommended from a 2 bolt anchor station on The Rib.  Alternatively, a careful single rope rappel can be done to gain the mid-wall anchor on The Rib.  From the top, rappellers must push to the right to reach the second anchor ledge, and do risk swinging into left into space if they slip, which could leave them hanging in space and needing to ascend the rope.  Knot your ends and use a backup.  Also, do not let go of your ropes upon reaching the ledge or they will swing 20' to the left.  From the Mid-wall anchor, rappel left off the ledge (straight back will send you for a ride) A 60m rope just barely reaches the platform below.

Alternatively, there is a faint climbers trail that descends the back side of the cliff, eventually crossing a drainage / gully close to the highway, rejoining the approach trail.

Getting There

Hike up the cliffside trail off of I80 for a 1/4 mile or so and look for a large boulder with a 12" tree atop it, this is the belay for the farthest right route "The Rib" 5.3
