DescriptionOnly a few hours east of Marrakech, one may access the highest mountain in Morocco, and North Africa. There are a variety of technical mountaineering routes as well as numerous opportunities for ice and mixed climbing on the North face of Jbel Toubkal. This trek, and others in the area, may have the charm of trekking in the Himalaya at a fraction of the price and altitude. The people of Imlil and the Toubkal refuges are friendly regardless of any language barriers.
A 5 star place to stay with meals to suit a king is the Riad Imlil: riadimlil.com/ where Rashied will take good care of you. You may also rent crampons and ice-axes from here! When you roll into Imlil, you may be overwhelmed by men insisting on you staying at their hotel. This is the main source of their income so be polite but firm in your intent. You may also be charged by a man saying he watched your car overnight. This is common in Morocco and again be fair and friendly.
There are two refuges at the base of Jbel Toubkal, and you may also camp. The further refuge is reputed to have better heat, meals, and plumbing, so get there early to reserve your bed.
Getting ThereWith a full tank of gas, and food, Take the 203 out of Marrakech to Tahnaout, make sure you don't end up on S 507. Follow 203 to Asni (this section of the road is spectacular, but pay attention, the drivers on this road are wild, also look out for shepherds). In Asni, there will be a turn for Imlil, follow this dirt road past ramshackle buildings until you end up in central Imlil and park to the left where the road takes a hard right.
