Description

The closest climbing crag to a trailhead at Old Rag (that is, if you're coming from the Berry Hollow side). It's about a 2 mile hike.

Good quality trad, sport, and toprope.

This northwest facing cliff is out of the sun for a good share of the day. As such, it is one of the better options for climbing at Old Rag in the summertime.

Getting There

From Berry Hollow, head up to the Saddle Trail. Continue past the Old Rag Shelter till the trail winds through a two-story boulder and shortly thereafter reaches the first set of stone steps.

A little way up the steps, where the path takes a right turn, there is a climbers trail on the left, marked by a cairn (and a fallen log, parallel to the trail -- see the comments section). Follow the trail for 100 meters, until it turns uphill near a slight ridge. Follow the trail uphill for 150 meters and then take a left through a break in the rock. Follow the trail to the Lower Sunset Wall.

As of May 26, 2014, the climbers trail starts where a large tree trunk has fallen parallel to the saddle trail. My partner and I put a cairn up where the start of the trail should go. You may still have to keep an eye out for it. The fallen tree trunk confused the hell out of us and we bushwacked/GPS until we finally found the trail. May 26, 2014

The cairns don't seem to be at the beginning of the trail anymore. My partner wandered around for a while to find the trail. The log is a great marker and the "trail" leads into a bunch of boulders. Pay attention to the lack of lichen on some of the boulders and that's the way to take... Cairns will eventually mark the trail. Sep 10, 2015
