Description
Old Rock Climbers (ORC) wall is a secluded wall back in the trees. Setup for the entire wall is easy if you have long slings. Lots of chances for new routes available here, with some good 5.8 - 5.10+ climbing on the face between the chimney on the south side and Lumberjack Crack on the north side. Beware of bugs during summer in the forest.
Setting Up
There are two scrambles that will bring you to the top if you do not feel like leading Lumberjack Crack.
Setting Up
There are two scrambles that will bring you to the top if you do not feel like leading Lumberjack Crack.
- South scramble: Bushwhack your way south towards the quarry. Before exiting the tree line and entering the quarry, an easy scramble takes you to the top of the rock. Pick a safe path north through some prairie / cliff tops to get back to the setup.
- North scramble: The quicker of the two if you don't mind a bit more climbing. Head a little north of Orc wall and keep your eye left. About 100 feet from Orc wall is a simple class 4 / 5.1-ish climb that will take you 20 feet to the top of the cliff. Pick a quick path south back to the top of Orc.
Getting There
There are three ways to get to Orc wall.
Bushwhacking
Similar to the scenic start below. From the parking lot off of 141st st., take the obvious path up into the quarry. Walk to the far edge of the quarry (near the boulder patch) and enter the forest on the right. Bushwhack about 60 yards along the rock line (according to the Blue Mounds climbing guide). See Locating the Wall below for a brief description of the face.
Scenic Start
From the parking lot off of 141st st., take the obvious path up into the quarry. As you enter the quarry, look right for a path leading into the forest. The path will take you down a ways but slowly trend north. After crossing a small creek (about 3 ft. wide) the path leads back uphill. See Locating the Wall below.
Paved Start
From the parking lot off of 141st st., take the quartz / cement path that runs next to the corn fields. Walk until you see the permanent port-a-potty (roughly a fifth of a mile) and look left for a small path leading through the tall grass and general brush and up into the forest. Once you enter the forest, turn right and go uphill. See Locating the Wall below.
Locating the Wall
When the path crests, you have two options. Continuing north (i.e. turning right) takes you to the Kanaranzi walls. Turning left and hiking about 50 ft takes you to Orc Wall (defined by the "VW sized chimney" on the left, per the Blue Mounds climbing guide, and Lumberjack Crack on the right.)
