Crescent Rocks

Virginia > Shenandoah & NW VA Re…

Description

Crescent Rock squeezes around thirty climbs onto a small cliff face. While most of the routes here are top rope climbs, there are a few quality trad leads. The south facing cliff receives plenty of sunshine throughout the entire day. This makes for great climbing in the fall, winter, and spring. There is no problem climbing here in the summer as long as like the Virginia heat. Make sure you beat the heat and bring your own water, there is no natural water supply in the area.

Climbs range from 5.8 (The Dish) to grueling 5.12d (Litigiousness Psychosis). Since the crag is close to a few metropolitan areas it tends to get a little crowded during the weekends. Consider sharing ropes with another group or you could get stuck on one route for a little while.

Getting There

Apparently access on Raven Rock Road has been restricted so please hike in on the AT and park at AT parking lot on Route 7. The hike is strenuous, but well worth is with some great top roping a few leads. Link fromhikingupward.com for directions to the parking lot. .

[Hide Comment] I am just wondering if anyone that climbs here is in the digital age? I would love to see some photos of this place. Jan 30, 2011

[Hide Comment] Some more photos would be nice for sure. Feb 1, 2011
[Hide Comment] Do not use the parking area on Raven Rock road. Everyone that parked there on 6 apr 14 got a ticket even though we were in the area without no parking signs. Hopefully it will be thrown out in court but still what a pain. Apr 12, 2014

[Hide Comment] There's a new development going in on the Jefferson County, WV side of Raven Rocks Rd. There are a lot of restrictive signs up and whatnot and plenty of No Parking signs. If you're going to approach from Raven Rocks Rd, park on the shoulder on the Virginia side (where there aren't any No Parking signs...there aren't any on the VA side) and walk down to the access trail beyond the old cell tower trail. There's an old gated access with a No Parking sign on it that can be used for access. This trail will take you to the trail on the backside of the cell tower. Apr 5, 2015

[Hide Comment] Was thinking of going up there, and exchanged some correspondence with Andy.
Has anybody been here that has some information about access. Don't want to drive 1.5 hours and get locked out, or have a ticket when I get back to car.

Thank you. Nov 9, 2015
[Hide Comment] How far past the old access road is this other access trail? The normal way of getting in from Raven Rocks Rd. is pretty closed off at the moment. Dec 15, 2015
[Hide Comment] The trail is very rough and rocky, there is a sign that says "spring" and a small campground where the Raven Rocks hollow stream is. At this point there is also a trail that leads to the left marked with blue blazes, ignore this trail and continue on the AT. When you get to the cliff from the Virginia side you will be more or less at the top of the Washington Wall, go left for the easiest walk down for the right wing. There are no bolts at crescent rocks, 20 meters of static would allow you to do any route. Aug 20, 2017

[Hide Comment] Definitely hike up the AT; don't park on Raven Rock Road. Very aggressive "No Parking" and "Trespassing" signs are now continuously posted past the Jefferson County sign. We managed to find a single pullout and walk to the cell tower along the power line, but I would strongly discourage this.

The easiest way to access the bottoms of all three cliffs is definitely the path that wraps around the end of the Right Sector. Lots and lots of thorny bushes at the top, bottom, and even middle of the cliffs! Mar 17, 2019
