Routes in Khazad Dum

Bil-Bolting-Baggins S 5.9- 5c 17 VI 16 HVS 4c

Description

Probably the most remote area of Middle Earth, but worth the hike for the route Bil-Bolting-Baggins. Very secluded, great rock.

Getting There

(Help describing the approach would be appreciated)Follow the trail around the Outlets and up the hill to the start of Middle Earth. Instead of going down at the hill crest, take a left and follow a trail up the hillside for a short distance. You will pass Fanghorn Hills on the right. Head down the trail past Torech Ungol on the left, then past Barad Dur and Minus Morgul (currently not listed in Mountain Project) Keep heading NW for about 5 minutes until you reach the South facing Khazad Dum.

Continue walking down the "Baranquin River" drainage past the west end of the "Far Downs". Climb down through a notch then hike up and left through the valley that forms "The Shire" to "Kazad Dum". Mar 29, 2008
After climbing down at the notch below Far Downs, (I have seen a short length of rope fixed there, but not currently) go left and up a little steep hill to a saddle. The route will be downhill 50' or so on your right (north). I think. The route we climbed the other day had a new good bolt at the bottom (crux, soft .9?...then .7 to the top), then followed a line of Leepers and 1/4" buttonheads to a slung spike summit, which is slightly lower than the actual top, which blocks the view towards the hwy switchbacks, which are quite close, but across a deep gulch). There is another line of newer bolts just to the climber's left of this route that looks more generously bolted and possibly .9-, but we ran out of time. A 70m rope will get you down from the spiky summit rap alings. A 60m should get you real close to the ground, but not quite. Apr 26, 2012
