Getting weather forecast...

Description

The Dump recieves lots of sun, making it a great winter destination. It also has probably the best concentration of sport routes in the NC High Country. That being said, you may find lots of people here. They'll probably be concentrated on a small handful of routes, though. The metamorphic sandstone lends itself to nice edges, pockets, and other faceholds. There's a good mix of steep and slabby routes at a variety of difficulties.

Getting There

The Dump is roadside off of Highway 221 between Blowing Rock and Linville. Coming from Blowing Rock, look for a large dirt parking lot on the left just past the Avery/Caldwell county line sign. Leave your car and hike up the obvious trail to the cliff (about 2 minutes).

Agree with the comment above: This place is a sweet little gem and the name is completely ironic! Jun 26, 2017

To further beta-ify where the parking is, if you're coming from Boone, keep in mind it's the second county line sign that you pass. It's about a 1/10th of a mile past Pilot Ridge Road, which steeply drops off to the left. Sep 15, 2015

The Footslogger's map has an area on the opposite side of the road for boulders at The Dump. I went to the parking lot, and heard voices down the hillside, but I couldn't find a suitable way down. Both ways I tried had ass-tons of broken glass, tons of vegetation, and no clear trail. Is the trail a walk down the road, or am I missing something here? Aug 10, 2015

I just wanted to say that this is an awesome little crag with a very misleading name. Thanks to all that had a hand in developing and maintaining it!

I'm baffled that it's not included in the Lambert guide...it must be because this crag contradicts his thesis that NC should be preserved as a museum for "ground up traditional ethics". Mar 19, 2012

It seems that a guide is now available at Footsloggers which includes the dump. Oct 15, 2009

The Boone climbing site was a great resource for climbs at The Dump, Ship Rock, and Holloway Mountain, but I can't seem to find it anymore either. If anyone knows anything about the demise of that site, I'd like to know what happened. Oct 15, 2009

There used to be a list of all the routes on a website. I think it might have been called climbboonenc.com or something like that. It even had the GPS cords for the parking area. I don't think that site is around anymore though. Sep 17, 2009
