Access Issue: Seasonal Closures Details

Description

Without a doubt this is the highest concentration of hard boulder problems in Eldorado Canyon. There are a dozen or more beautifully formed boulders scattered throughout the ridges to the south of Eldorado Canyon Trail. The setting is peaceful and blissfully quiet (let's keep it that way, please leave the music at home!).

Eds. These may have been called The Pony Kegs.

Getting There

It is best to go with someone who knows the area well. The approach is described in Colorado Bouldering 2 by Benningfield and Samet. The boulders are scattered on the ridges to the south of the Eldorado Canyon Trail after you pass the Rincon cutoff and the trail levels out. A couple of the boulder are visible on the ridge lines but most are hidden in the trees. It is very easy to walk right past a classic boulder and not even see it because of the contour of the land and the junipers.

Per Mike McHugh: there is a trail reroute. There's a new sustainable trail to access the two lowest (southernmost) boulders - aka the Pony Kegs. About 20' after the bench on the Eldorado Canyon Trail, you'll see the sign and new trail heading off to your left.

I added some photos. Should this not be changed to just the Eldo Canyon Trail Boulders since there are more than just the Musicals here? Let the adventures begin! Dec 27, 2009

I named these the musical boulders way back in the '70s listening to a song by Peter Gabriel (Genesis) called the "Musical Box". I was on a bouldering roll, sent a load of problems, 5.13 style, and the song played in my head, before Walkman, before iPod, and so I named them the "Musical Boulders" way back when. Feb 4, 2013
Bummer. A big "no trespassing" sign is now blocking the bouldering trail to this area. So much for my Eldo bouldering projects on the Lost Boulder. Since when was this private land? No infrastructure, buildings, or arable land. Where's the owner? May 17, 2015

"Since when was this private land? No infrastructure, buildings, or arable land. Where's the owner?" Sorry, amigo, but none of these questions matter. It is private land, and the owner says you can't be on it. Done deal. May 17, 2015

Anyone been up here recently? Is the Lost Boulder definitely closed? Dec 21, 2015

It seems like the Lost Boulders are closed, while the Pony Keg and Ron's Keg are still open.... Feb 4, 2017
